"NO CELL PHONES"

“I do not use a cell phone” – Rajat Kapoor
Rajat kapoor is an actor, writer, director from Bollywood. He started his film career from Dil Chahta Hai as an actor and went onto direct his debut film Private Detective. Post which multi-talented Rajat went on to write and direct independent films like Raghu Romeo, Mixed Doubles, Mithya and Fatso.

On the edit of his forthcoming film “Ankhon Dekhi” I got a chance to work and interact with this intellectual director. I overheard somebody saying, “Rajat Kapoor never uses cell phone”, I couldn’t believe it and out of curiosity, I began observing him and I was surprised to see a person with such an hectic schedule not using a cell phone. I wondered how he communicated with everybody without a cell phone. One fine day, I gathered my guts and asked him “how do you manage your busy schedule (Filming, shooting, meetings, etc) without cell phone?” He replied, “Maine kabhi cell phone use hi nahi kiya (I have never used a cell phone). He smiled and said, “People use to manage without a cell phone twenty years back then why not now? I feel cell phones have become a fad”, He signed off.

It’s unbelievable that Rajat functions very well in spite of not using a cell phone. He manages to be always on time whether it’s for a shoot, meeting or an edit. People who are working with him are very impressed with his pace. The main credit for his pace goes to his staff, which is equally very well organized.

I further began asking him more questions:

Since how long are you not using a cell phone? Is it a personal decision to stay away from a cell phone?
No, it’s my own decision. I don’t like to use cell phone and I never use a cell phone.

But what made you decide that?
I think life should be easy, life should be made simple and I don’t think gadgets help you make it simple. Though sometimes it helps, it’s usually complicated. I am trying to live my life simple by not using a mobile phone. Nowadays, mobile phone has become a fad.  People use mobile phone for other activities more than the main feature that is communicating. I think twenty years before people could manage everything without cell phone.

I’ve heard that all your calls and meetings are arranged via office. Is it true? How do you manage that?
I think I am one of the most organized people in the country. I don’t need a mobile phone. My office staff help me a lot.

Do you feel angry about those who are addicted to cell phones?
Yes, sometimes.

How active are you in the social media space?
I am active on Twitter, Facebook but it’s only for networking. I usually search new talent on the web. Otherwise, I am not so addicted.
